In afwachting van hun status in een asielzoekerscentrum ondervinden gevluchte studenten vaak allerlei belemmeringen om hun studie voort te zetten. Ze hebben geen rechten of documenten om te kunnen studeren, of erbij te werken en raken geïsoleerd. SERVUS wil deze bijzondere groep studenten de hand reiken, hen weer aansluiting geven bij de academische wereld en een eerste gevoel van verbondenheid met een leergemeenschap bieden.
We Shall Overcome
De lezingenreeks We Shall Overcome combineert interactieve lezingen met persoonlijk mentorschap. Dit stelt de studenten in staat weer te beginnen met de opbouw van een kennis- en sociaal netwerk. De thema’s die voorbij komen:
- A cross-cultural dialogue;
- Introduction to Dutch higher education;
- Good Health and Well-being; introduction to Dutch healthcare;
- Introduction to the Dutch labour market.
Certificaat
De Engelstalige mini-cursus wordt verzorgd door een interdisciplinair team van VU-docenten, mentoren, oud-vluchtelingenstudenten en lokale hulporganisaties. Deelnemers krijgen na afloop een certificaat, een voorbereidende stap om zich in te schrijven om opnieuw te gaan studeren of om werk te vinden.
De lezingenreeks biedt een educatieve bijdrage aan het bevorderen van intercultureel begrip en vrede en past uitstekend binnen zowel de missie van de VU als die van de Unesco Commissie.

VU Amsterdam organises 'We Shall Overcome' lecture series for refugee students
In autumn 2023, SERVUS, the service-leadership centre of VU Amsterdam, will organise a lecture series for refugee students. The Netherlands Commission for Unesco is granting patronage to the project.
While waiting for their status in an asylum seekers' centre, refugee students often face all kinds of obstacles to continue their studies. They have no rights or documents to study or work, and can become isolated. SERVUS aims to reach out to this special group of students, reconnecting them to academia and providing an initial sense of belonging to a learning community.
We Shall Overcome
The lecture series We Shall Overcome combines interactive lectures with individual mentoring. This enables students to start building a knowledge and social network again. The themes to be covered are:
- A cross-cultural dialogue;
- Introduction to Dutch higher education;
- Good Health and Well-being; Introduction to Dutch healthcare;
- Introduction to the Dutch labour market.
Certificate
The English-language mini-course is organised by an interdisciplinary team of VU lecturers, mentors, former refugee students and local aid organisations. Participants will receive a certificate upon completion, a preparatory step to be able to re-enter the university or to find work.
The lecture series offers an educational contribution to promoting intercultural understanding and peace and fits perfectly within both VU's mission and that of the Netherlands Commission for Unesco.
