The prestigious international For Women in Science programme is a collaboration between Unesco and L’Oréal with the tagline: ‘The world needs science, and science needs women’. The programme awards prizes to exceptional women scientists. The national version of the programme in the Netherlands consists of two components: the NIAS-KNAW fellowships (since 2012) and the Rising Talent prizes (since 2019).

Please note: there will not be a For Women in Science Call in 2024. The prize programme will return in 2025.

NIAS-KNAW fellowships

Two grants are awarded each year to women scientists, who conduct research in the life sciences or in the STEM disciplines, and who obtained their doctorates at least three years and at most ten years ago (maternity leave and periods of part-time work due to family circumstances may be deducted). For 2023 the grants are worth € 30,000 each. They are intended for a stay (fellowship) at NIAS-KNAW in Amsterdam, where the researcher, free from regular teaching and administrative obligations, can focus for one semester on broadening their research and writing publications or grant proposals.

Who’s eligible?

Applicants are invited to submit a proposal in the life sciences or in the STEM disciplines. Here, the life sciences are defined as: research focusing on scientific and engineering knowledge, which helps to understand the underlying processes in the existence of living organisms. This includes the study of conditions of health and disease in humans. STEM is broadly defined as research in the fields of science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

Since the program aims to improve the career prospects of women researchers and increase the number of women professors in the Netherlands, only applicants with a permanent or temporary position at a Dutch university or research institute are eligible.
