The purpose of the Chair is to promote an integrated system of research, training, information and documentation in the field of human rights and peace. The Chair also contributes to strengthening teaching, research, transfer and dissemination of knowledge and capacity-building in the field of human rights and in particular social, economic and cultural rights.

The Chair-holder aims to contribute to finding ways and means to strike a fair balance between the socio-economic consequences of globalisation and respect for social, economic and cultural rights.
