UNESCO in the Netherlands
Document acties
UNESCO has two central points of contact in the Netherlands. The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science / International Policy Directorate coordinates UNESCO affairs for the Dutch government. The National UNESCO Commission is the linchpin between UNESCO and professional organisations/civil society. The Ministry and the Commission maintain close contact with one another.
There are also a large number of institutions and individuals in the Netherlands involved in unesco’s work. Individual experts assist unesco with the execution of the programme and through the provision of policy advice. For example, scientists and policymakers united in the National IHP/HWRP Committee contribute to unesco’s International Hydrological Programme (IHP) and also function as the link to the Hydrology and Water Resources Programme (HWRP) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The unesco-IHE Institute for Water Education in Delft trains students from all corners of the world to be engineers who are capable of improving water management. Museums and archives are directly linked to unesco via their international organisations such as the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and International Council on Archives (ICA). UNESCO’s World Heritage sites in the Netherlands collaborate in the World Heritage Platform (Stichting Platform Werelderfgoed Nederland). The Netherlands is also seeing increasing numbers of unesco schools, which organise numerous activities both inside and outside the classroom according to the unesco principles.
