The National UNESCO Commission has a maximum of eleven members who volunteer their expertise in one or more of UNESCO’s five fields of action: education, natural sciences, social & human sciences, culture, and communication & information. The members are appointed by the minister of Education, Culture and Science (OCW).
The Commission also has a number of advisory members: the Permanent Delegate of the Netherlands to UNESCO, representatives from OCW and the ministry of Economic Affairs (EZ), representatives from the governments of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba, one representative from the National Youth Council, and the General Secretary who is also the director of the Commission’s Secretariat.
The Commission has three working groups made up of experts who are active in UNESCO’s specific domains. These experts form the core of the Commission’s network.
The Commission receives annual funding from OCW in order to carry out its activities and for the personnel costs of the Secretariat. Additionally, the Commission receives financial resources for specific activities, including from UNESCO’s Participation Programme which supports initiatives of unesco member states.
The structure and tasks of the National UNESCO Commission have been established by Royal Decree.

Ms G. van den Bergh, president of the National unesco Commission, is int. al. member of the Board of Quality Assurance Netherlands Universities (QANU), president of the Internationale Council for Curators of Dutch and Flemish Art (CODART), member of the Supervisory Board Institut Néerlandais in Paris and member of the Committee of Approval Higher Education Flanders.

Ms A.C. van Kampen, deputy chair of the Working Group for Education, specialising in cultural education; independent consultant and mediator; president of the programme council for the Kennisnet organisation for IT in education.
Prof. S. Legêne, chairwoman of the Working Group for Culture, Communication and Information; professor of Political History in the History department (Faculty of Arts), VU University Amsterdam.
M. Sini, member of the Working Group for Education, specialising in dialogue between cultures and cultural diversity; director of Central Netherlands Regional Education and Training Centres (ROC Midden Nederland); president of the Islam and Citizenship Foundation; vice-president of the Association of Dutch Voluntary Effort Organizations (NOV).

Secretariat
The National UNESCO Commission is supported by the Secretariat, under the direction of the General Secretary. The secretariat's administration and accommodations are provided by Nuffic, the Netherlands organization for international cooperation in higher education based in The Hague.
